Nine days a year down, then seven years without one

LogisticsVirtualization

Client
A logistics operator, 200 staff
  • 7 Years+ Without a day of downtime
  • 9 to 0 Days lost a year
  • Rs 63 lakh Loss Avoided

Challenge

Two hundred people did their work by remote desktop onto two ordinary Windows servers. Malware got in about three times a year, usually one wrong click by somebody who meant no harm, and each time the servers were down for three days. That is nine working days a year with nobody able to work, at a lakh a day before anything operational is counted.

Solution

IOPStor replaced both servers with a compute node running VMware and an IOPStor NAS behind it. Staff connect exactly as they did before, by remote desktop, so nobody had to be retrained and nothing about the working day changed. The difference is underneath: the desktops are virtual machines on ZFS storage, snapshotted, so a corrupted system is rolled back instead of rebuilt.

Results

Seven years, and not one day lost. On the firm's own figures the old arrangement would have cost sixty-three days of downtime and Rs 63 lakh over the same period. If something does go wrong now the target is thirty minutes back up rather than three days, a hundred and forty times faster - and in seven years it has not been needed.

What we deployed

  • An IOPStor compute node running VMware
  • An IOPStor NAS on ZFS behind it
  • Remote desktop kept exactly as staff knew it
  • Snapshots, so a corrupted desktop rolls back instead of being rebuilt

“The best thing I can say is that nothing changed for my staff. Two hundred people log in exactly the way they always did. It just stopped breaking.”
